SOLDANO SL412 Slant 4×12 Guitar Cabinet

The origin of the modern high gain amplifier, the Soldano amplifier

faithfully reproduces the sound of the cabinet created by Mike Soldano, a rare amp builder who is said to be the father of modern high gain amps.

SOLDANO SL412 Slant Introduction

Founded by Michael Soldano, Soldano Amplification is also a pioneer of modern amplifiers. It is based in Los Angeles, the home of music. As with other amp builders, while they repaired amps brought in by various musicians, they also created original amps and repeatedly remodelled and prototyped them. Soldano started with the development of a clone of a Fender Bassman amplifier, which became the basis for the SLO-100 (Super Lead Overdrive), the flagship model of the Soldano amplifier.

The SLO-100 is one of the world’s earliest completed amp heads with a clean channel, crunch channel, lead channel, and the configuration of the current mainstream multi-channel amp. Being able to produce a variety of tones from a single amp is the best for LA session guitarists like Steve Lukather and Michael Landau, and it has been active in their stages and recordings for many years.

After that, the X-77 and X-88 were released with rack preamps instead of existing amp heads and combo amps. The X-88 was then the prototype for the 3+ preamp by Custom Audio Electronics. Soldano had already succeeded in designing amps that produced a wide variety of tones with the SLO-100 and X-88, but then he launched a revolutionary amp called the X-99 preamp. By equipping the X-99 with servo motors in the GAIN and TONE’s POT necessary for tone adjustment, they succeeded in the memorising and total recall of tones. This makes it possible to set the desired tone and instantly recall the sound stored in memory via MIDI.

They then released some amp heads to respond to the sound demanded by the trends of the day. However, Soldano’s flagship model, SLO-100, continued to reign. Some of you may know that the SLO-100 was the prototype for the circuit of Peavey’s Eddie Van Halen signature model, the 5150. There is no doubt that Michael Soldano’s ideas and products, such as the SLO-100 and X-88, have had a great influence on amplifier manufacturers around the world.

In the end, Michael Soldano closed his factory, but sold the company to Boutique Amps Distribution and works as an amplifier designer and continues to manufacture amplifiers to this day.

We recorded the rare ’90s Soldano 412 cabinet. Although the enclosure is a little thinner than the current 412 cabinets, it uses a unique multi-layered birch material, and the open and bright sound is wholly American.
