It is a standard condenser microphone that is used as a guitar recording microphone by studios and engineers all over the world.
It is used as a guitar recording microphone, and its sound is characterized by its fine texture and clear grain, which is unique to a condenser, and its thick midrange. It picks up sound with a colourless and transparent sound.
Since NEUMANN was founded in Berlin, Germany in 1928, it has been a pioneer in the audio world, recording the voices and music works of many celebrities for over 90 years.
At the time of its establishment, it sold the world’s first mass-produced condenser microphone “CMV3”, and popularized it. The U87 was born in 1967, from the legendary U47 microphone (1949). It has been, since the U47 generation, the world standard in the professional recording industry for vocal and narration recording.
The sound is NEUMANN’s typical plump and solid mid-range expressiveness, which is excellent anyway. From low to high frequencies, the frequency response is straightforward and less dramatized. The thickness of the sound, the sense of depth, and the sense of air, all have a tremendous sense of stability. It is the only mic that you can proceed to the mix as it is. Being strong in editing is a big advantage in recording.
It is most frequently used for vocal recordings, where the brightness of the high frequencies stands out, while the fullness of the low frequencies is preserved. It has a smooth, dense sound with a strong presence, and the mic itself has a unique compression feel. This may be the so-called “NEUMANN sound”.
With its solid bass response and excellent midrange detail, it works well with stringed instruments such as bass and guitar, and even when you hit high tones, it has density and delicate sound. It is often used as a spot mic for soloists such as the cello.
Its versatility that does not choose gender, genre, vocalist, or instrument is its best feature. It’s amazing how the sound can be “usable” no matter what kind of sound source you put it on.
Speaking of the U87Ai, it has become a standard for vocal recording, but it also shines in the recording of musical instruments. In terms of polar patterns, it is equipped with a dual-diaphragm capsule with three directional patterns, omnidirectional, unidirectional, and figure of eight, and can be used in an extremely wide range of situations.
As an aside, the ability to switch between multiple directivities with a single mic has become popular these days, and NEUMANN laid the foundation for this.
By enabling the 10dB attenuation switch on the back, you can process up to 127dB (equivalent to a sound pressure of 45Pa) without distortion. The other switch allows you to change the cutoff frequency, reducing proximity effect interference directly at the microphone input.
It’s a versatile mic that can be used with any sound source, and it’s no surprise that it’s a world standard, so it’s almost always included in comparisons.
The included wooden case with logo engraving gives it a luxurious feel, and together with the texture of the nickel body of the microphone itself, feels exquisite.
