Egnater amplifiers have always been innovators of guitar amplifiers. In recent years, Egnater’s flagship amp Rebel has combined the good old American sound with the British sound at a high level.
Thirty years ago, Bruce Egnater, the founder of Egnater amplifiers, was an electrical engineering student who loved artists like Iggy Pop, Ted Nugent, Bob Seger, Alice Cooper, Jimi Hendrix and Cream.
With the emergence of various styles of music in the 1970s, guitarists were looking for louder, higher gain distorted tones. At the time, there were no amps that could produce such tones, so Bruce began building his own amps. He also attended the Detroit Institute of Technology to study electronics in depth. As a student, Bruce also worked at Zoppi’s Music on 8 Mile Road in Detroit repairing various music equipment. Then in 1975. Bruce opened his own store. His main focus was amp modification, and he provided equipment to meet the needs of guitarists.
Bruce explored various circuits to obtain new tones, but he could not produce the ideal tone simply by modifying existing amps. Also, at the time none of the current high-gain tube amps were working on amps with a master volume control. The only way to get overdrive was to blast the amp.
Bruce decided to connect an attenuator with a resistor instead of a speaker. The method was followed by similar techniques for guitarists throughout the United States. He then developed an amplifier that could produce both high gain and clean sounds. With both a clean and an overdrive channel, each with separate and independent controls, the two-channel switching amp was born. By increasing the gain, he succeeded in developing a guitar amp that is highly playable without blasting the amp.
Guitarists across the United States heard rumors of the new tube amps and orders began to come in. Bruce became known as a leader in innovative multi-channel tube designs. As an innovator of guitar amplifiers, Bruce has developed and collaborated with several top companies.
He then designed a revolutionary modular amplifier. While the power amp is fixed, the amp configuration can be changed to suit the guitarist’s tastes and needs by replacing the modular and preamp modules. The patented modular tube amps are used by a wide variety of musicians and producers worldwide.
With humble beginnings at Zoppi’s Music on 8 Mile Road, Egnater Amplification is a brand of amplifiers that is constantly innovating in the amplifier industry. Bruce is an innovator who continually strives to find new ways to achieve the ultimate tone.
