ROYER R-121 Guitar Recording microphone

As a guitar recording microphone, the ROYER R-121

Royer Labs, founded by David Royer in 1998, is an audio equipment manufacturer that focuses on ribbon microphones. Until then, ribbon mics had high performance, but they were extremely delicate and prone to failure, making them difficult to handle.
However, with the advent of Royer Labs, the ribbon microphone was revived after half a century. The model that triggered this was the flagship model R-121.

While retaining the strengths of ribbon mics, such as the quick response and analog warm texture, this unit has drastically improved the drawbacks of ribbon mics, which are said to be large, heavy and fragile, and is compact and durable. Its output of 135 dB was revolutionary and re-established the definition of ribbon microphones in the 21st century.
It does not require a power supply and has high mobility, leading it to be highly valued on-site. It has become established as the standard for electric guitar and brass recordings.

The patented “offset ribbon technology” is used inside.
This is to keep the characteristics of all frequency bands even at high SPL, and a ribbon diaphragm with a thickness of only 2.5 microns is attached at our factory by skilled engineers.
The sound quality is very realistic, this sound is a characteristic of ribbon microphones that cannot be reproduced with dynamic or condenser microphones.
but the R-121 is a highly recommended mic when you want to record the.
It has a flat and well-balanced response, a low end that doesn’t get boomy, a midrange that doesn’t lose detail, and a high end that feels smooth and natural.
It is bi-directional and can capture sound even from the back, and it has a slightly brighter frequency response than the front.

Royer Labs ribbon mics incorporate plenty of modern technology without losing the warmth and smoothness of good old ribbon mics.
For electric guitar picks up, the sound is surprisingly clear and is extremely flat from the low end of about 80Hz to 1kHz to the entire midrange. In particular, the midrange details are well expressed.
It can also handle a high output of 135dB, so keep in mind that one of the options is a high-quality ribbon microphone that can be set up very close even with a 100W-over amplifier.
(It is recommended to tilt the microphone so that the sound pressure does not hit the ribbon directly.)
For acoustic guitar pickup, it has warmth and mellowness, but a strong presence. It goes well with the back side and accentuates the bright and gorgeous sound of the strings.

In addition, the combination with SHURE SM57 has become a standard for guitar recording, and the use of R-121 for low end and detail and SM57 for highs has become established.
